Circular economy explained simply
The circular economy is a sustainable economic model that aims to keep resources in use for as long as possible, minimize waste and reuse or recycle materials. In contrast to the classic linear economy (“take-make-dispose” – i.e. extracting raw materials, manufacturing products and disposing of them after use), the circular economy is based on a closed system in which products, components and materials are used and returned as efficiently as possible.
Circular Economy Act
In Germany, the Closed Substance Cycle and Waste Management Act (KrWG) regulates how waste must be avoided, recycled and disposed of. It implements the EU directives on waste management and is intended to promote a resource-conserving circular economy. The aim is to recover as many recyclable materials as possible from waste and reduce the environmental impact of landfills and incineration.
